I don't think Americans are squeamish at all. HOw many times have I heard "I have to pee like a racehorse"? I mean, if you're sitting with family friends in Jane Austen's England, can you excuse yourself at all? I can just picture myself waiting till the last possible moment to excuse myself, coming up with some lame mention of needing a shawl, and having someone offer to get it for me...

I'm not satisfied... Even in the Royal Navy's ships they had enough sense to close off the "bathrooms" and keep 'em in the stern of the ships so the wind wouldn't blow it all past everyone...
