] Caroline, is an Alderney the same thing as a welsh cow? I thought Harriet had a Welsh cow, a pretty little Welsh cow...;-)

You are right, Lesley, it was a Welsh Cow wasn't it? I was muddling it up with Betty Barker's cow in Cranford, which was an Alderney.Betty was besotted with hers, and when it fell into the lime-pit and had it's hair singed off, she dressed it in a flannel jacket and breeches! Thanks for putting me straight, dear!
