] Caroline, is an Alderney the same thing as a welsh cow? I thought Harriet had a Welsh cow, a pretty little Welsh cow...;-)
If this is the case, stating that it was a Welsh cow would be more feminine which is why Harriet would have a pretty little one. Welsh is a romantic name.
Saying that it is an Alderney cow sound a little more masculine and were be more proper for a man or someone who does not deserve a pretty little cow.
Jane might have considered this very thing when choosing the character of her cows... please don't laugh... I'm just kidding.
