... pretty much exactly as you quote it... and it illustrates Dorothea's character in a kind of a teasing way - one of my favourite little parts of that novel. Well remembered! Don't you think it's an Austenish kind of moment?

Re. the specific breeds: don't you think that this is just another example of the English as dog-lovers: no true English person would just mention a dog, unspecified, because it really matters what kind of a dog it is... Also, the breeds are an excellent indication of character, eg. Lady Bertram and the obnoxious pug.
