There's a mention of the toy breeds in Middlemarch, where Dorothea (who can be a teensy holier than all, still I like her a lot.) Anyway, Sir James tried to give her a little dog because he's trying to curry her favor and says he's heard that women like them. She scorns the gift, claiming her eyesight is so bad that she's afraid she might step on it. Really, she probably considers them frivilous, and maybe even a sign of vanity to own one.
Please forgive my quoting from the adaptation; it's been a while since I read Mm. -- but I'm 90% sure this bit was in the book, and it wouldn't be like Davies to make it up.
