I can remember my grandmother in South Africa talking about calling cards. In particular it was mentioned that one of their advantages was that by timing your call when you knew people were out, you were able to call and fullfil your social obligations without actually having to see the people. And likewise, you could be 'out' or 'not at home' to someone if you didn't feel like seeing them. I believe people use answering machines in the same way sometimes. The deviousness of human beings, and the sillinesses of social conventions change not.
