calling cards/receiving bowls

Actually, calling cards were still in use when my grandmother got married (sometime in the 30s, I think). One of her wedding gifts (and it's still on our sideboard in the dining room) was a glass-and-silver round platter for calling cards, which she used until calling cards went out of style.

P.S. The only reason a snippet like me (not yet twenty) remembers this is because the person who gave my grandmother the little platter rode the train to get to the wedding; because he was carrying the platter in his hip pocket (it's only 7" across), the silver rim is a trifle warped from where he sat on it!
