In previous centuries, if you called on someone who wasn't home, you left your card in a receiving bowl on the hall table or with the butler. That way the lady of the house knew who had dropped in that day and could send a note or return the call.

Sort of like a pre-telephones answer machine?! Sounds like a very practical idea I guess - also particularly interesting the way a folded card means different things.. could be potentially dangerous though if you commited a 'folding crime'!
