Kidnap your friend. Tie him to a comfy chair and gag him.Tell him he will not be ungagged until he agrees by nodding that he will read the first chapter of P&P out loud. When he agrees, hold the book up so that he doesn't hurt his neck or strain his eyes, and give him lots of encouragement. At the end of the chapter, make all the appropriate cooing noises, and release your secret weapon- a Jaqueline Susan novel! Make him read the first chapter of that!
At the end of this your friend should have a very good idea of the difference between a supermarket romance and a Jane Austen work. If he doesn't, repeat the treatment with chapter two..........
