Leaving cards??

I've read in several Jane Austen books about people leaving their card/giving their card to someone when calling on them...

What does this show/mean? What information would be on the card?

Hi everyone by the way - I'm a newbie (horrible term - what would Jane Austen think?!) from Wales, UK...
