Emma question

After Mr. Woodhouse dies, what happens to Hartfield? Let's assume that he dies before Emma marries, so she has no other place to call home. Would/could her sister come down and be mistress of Hartfield? Would there be enough money in the estate for Mr. John Knightley to give up his profession in London?

I've read HC's page, I think, concerning inheritance, in which he says that daughters share equally, unless the estate is entailed away, or the fortune is otherwise decided in the marriage articles.

[For those unfamiliar with Emma--if such unfortunate people exist...--Emma is Mr. Woodhouse's younger daughter, and mistress of Hartfield, since her sister married Mr. John Knightley (a younger son) who is a lawyer (I believe) in London.]

Thanks for any answers,
Kathy
