In response to But What did Jane Austen think?, written by Caroline on January 07, 1998 at 09:51:13

I'm having to search further and further down the page to find our discussion! I feel that anything else that I have to offer would be highly suppositious: I haven't found any further references to Rab in any of my JA texts, but some are packed, or 120km away (I'm in the process of moving).

Perhaps I should just say that my original comments were not meant to slander the braw bricht laddie, just to point out that he was a rebel of his time and had a reputation for romantic entanglements.

I take your point that he was also a part of the early C19 phenomenon of self educated people who were of artisan, or labouring classes, challenging the stranglehold of the aristocracy and gentry on education, philosophy and politics.

Thanks for the discussion, Caroline!
