Glad you found us, Karen!

Personally, think Hugh was supposed to look funny- Edward Ferrars in the book isn't handsome, dashing or heroic. He's sensible, shy, and very, very ordinary- and a definte contrast to Willoughby! Hugh Grant deserves credit for allowing his image to be not 'perfect' in this movie.
