In response to French Titles, written by The Mysterious H.C. on January 01, 1998 at 09:26:48
Actually, I have more Engilsh blood than anything, but Marie Bernadette is on my birth certificate, believe it or not (don't ask how). I do have a little French heritage, however, and am trying to learn French. I just looked at the caltrap site "Random thoughts on French nobility". ( 'By Dr. Pangloss', I love it! Viva Voltaire!) In the story I'm writing, one of my characters is a marquis. He is a French émigré living in England. I have it that his father died and he inherits the title of marquis. He has one younger brother. It sounds as though, according to the French system, his brother would be given the (courtesy?) title of count, if I read correctly. They are royalists and eventually get their land back. I call my marquis character the Marquis des Marest. Would his brother be the Comte des Marest or would he be Comte Something Else? You are right, the French system is very confusing! I'm determined to sort out these details, though, because I want my story to be as correct as possible.
