Question from a newcomer

Delighted to find this board!
We have discovered JA and love her works.
Among the many things that confuse, however: What DID the people do with all their time? We understand that, in P&P, for instance, Mr. Bennet sat and read, suppose he occasionally hunted and fished (for food as well as sport?)
We udnerstand that the women busied themselves with mending, needlework, the other accomplishments - but as in the A&E film, there are so many scenes - especially in the evenings - where the Bingleys and Darcy sit/stand idly.
Is that what people did, after dark (other than the OTHER thing)? Just played cards, played music, read or sat and waited for time to pass?
I know this question probably sounds incredibly naive amongst you who devote so much time and effort to JA and Regency, but I hope someone will enlighten me - get me on my way to devoting much more of my time to the same!
Thank you. Lee
