] However, a Regency Opera Hat was not the same as a Gibus, because it wasn't invented until after 1840, according to three costume books I have. So Beau Brummel's opera Hat was not one of these.
Could you be so good and check in your books what is the correct name for a flat crescent-shaped hat worn with the formal evening male outfit around 1790-1820. My sources say "bicorne", but apparently there are other possibilities. Thanks.
