Carl, I'm not familiar with American history, but the lifestyles of the gentry and landed nobility was a western european phenomena which was exported to English speaking colonies (and ex) such as Australia, Canada and I suspect the USA. The culture was heavily influenced by classical Greece and Rome and articulated through the Romantic Movement in Germany, French philosophy and made possible by the prosperity of the British Industrial and agricultural revolutions. Fashionable dress, music and economic systems were interrelated and European and I guess that America was not insulated from this western european movement.
Having said this, the elegant simplicity of the British minor gentry seems to have been echoed in the towns of the east coast.
