In response to For Marie Bernadette:On using contractions in speech., written by Mary Collette on December 24, 1997 at 11:06:57

As I understand it using contractions in speech was considered vulgar in the extreme.Though young gentlemen used them as part of the slang of the day.

Mary, does the book say why it was vulgar? Does it give any quotes from the era that would indicate that it was so? I know this is the period when the great Noah Webster was trying to persuade Americans that his way was the best way to write and talk, but there isn't any corresponding literary giant for Regency England who actually put it down on paper,as far as I know.(But then I know so little, that's hardly surprising!)
