Here is is a quote from page 229 of Jane Ashelford's The Art of Dress:
"There were women who refused to conform and who dared not to wear corsets or replaced them with lightly boned under-bodices - in the full knowledge that loose clothing was often equated with loose morals."
The only problem with this quote is that Ashelford is speaking of the Victorian/Edwardian era (1850-1914). She doesn't mention this attitude existing in the the18th or early 19th century. Still, it is interesting to contrast this attitude with the late 20th century where (generally) tight clothing is associated with loose morals.
