Someone mentioned the opium wars and in this light- the Rosewood/Mahogany/sandlewood chests used to ship the opium became quite fashionable as drawing room pieces.

As was with dress(turbans and jewels from India), oriental furniture and artifacts had hit the Europeon market.


The jewellery worn by Anna Chancellor( the pearls with cabochan rubies) does look very Indian, in contrast to the jewellery worn by Mrs Bennet, Lady Lucas(amethyst and either jade or uncut emerald at the N ball), Lady de Bourgh( very renaissance).

of course, I am not an expert but I do have an interest in the subject.
