When I was a kid my father bought me an original newspaper from London circa 1770s. There was alot in it about the colonies and other gov't goings on but nothing gossipy. It is about an 8x10 size and folded book style.

But I believe there were society gossip rags. Wasn't there something like that in Cyrano?
I have a newspaper, The Arizona Sentinel, that for the first time outside of Austen I have seen the word retrench used.
The date on this is 1876 so apparently that word was still used frequently enough to be understood in a newspaper article.
