There was a craze for things chinese, along with other things eastern and classical. many families had a member in service in India, Hongkong, Singapore and similar places. So there were copies of eastern stuff made, on a larges scale...

Hong Kong was ceded to Britain in 1842, after the first of the Opium Wars beginning in 1839. As this is after publication of P&P, was there actually British stationing in China before the onset of the Opium Wars?

P.S. Everyone has been so wonderful with the posts on the lists! Thank you.
