In response to How were quilts made in England? Did they use quilting frames?, written by Mary Collette on December 09, 1997 at 13:26:05

The English method of piecing is to wrap the fabric around stiff paper shapes, hexagons, squares or whatever, and secure it with tacks then oversew the pieces together and remove the tacks. I'm not sure if they would have used a frame to to keep the fabric taut while quilting. I suspect the image of women clustered around a frame quilting is very much an American one. I don't think quilting was quite the social thing in England that it was in America but I will look at some quilting books when I get home.
