Cucumber sandwichs

I have sometimes found (last time it was in "The Importance of Being Earnest") a reference to cucumber sandwichs as a "delicatessen" served at well-to-do and snobbish people's houses. I had always though the writers were being sarcastic (the context always allowed for such interpretation). However, I am no so sure now. I mean, I like cucumber sandwichs, and tomato sandwichs, but I would never have them served to guests!

Is anybody here familiar with this subject?
