I put in my other message that couples can join in by standing at the bottom of the set. However, I failed to explain that the "bottom" of a set (lines of dancers) is "away from the music" (i.e. at the farthest point in the line from the orchestra). The "top" is the end of the line nearest the music, and no one can join in from that point. Both ends of the line have "resting points," but new dancers can only join in at the bottom as "inactive" couples. They stand at the bottom of the line until a set of dancers "progresses" down the set, then they join in, heading up the set with the other inactive couples.
