] I seem to recall a portrait of Lord Byron with an earing, I may be wrong but that image is strong. I might be thinking of Nelson. If I'm right though, perhaps it was fashionable for men to have one earing, maybe in the Turkish fashion.
Shakespeare had one, too--left ear (I think). Wonder if Darcy had one... ;)
