To my knowledge, women did not shave anything until the 1940's. The soldiers gave very sheer silk stockings to their wives and girlfriends. A light bulb blinked on over the heads of the razor blade company execs who saw this as an excellent opportunity to sell more razors. A woman's leg has much more surface area to shave than a man's face so if you tell a woman that hairy legs are ugly you can stand to make a very tidy profit from the sale of all those razors!
] Do you know if Regency ladies "shaved" their legs or armpits, or did they go around "hairy"? I am aware of the fact that they didn't have to show their legs, as today, but it stills bothers me.
