This is all fact, but written very well so it is also enjoyable to read. Another very good one is Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie's Montaillou, which is about a little French village in the 14th and 15th centuries. It is exactly like a novel but even the characters all really existed. I understand it is based partly on the same documents as the CF movie The Hour of the Pig or The Advocate.
