In response to The Regency Pantry, written by P. Bingham on November 13, 1997 at 04:43:55

Hi, P Bingham, I don't believe we have met before. Welcome to the Regency Page of the Republic of Pemberley.

First, may I ask exactly what you have read so far? We are greatly into sharing information here, so we'd love to be able to read what you have read. Most of what we read and recommend can be found in our bibliography.

Secondly, why do you wish to know? If this information is for something you are writing, then you had best be aware that we are all amateurs here, and we cannot guarantee any statements made on the boards.

The positioning of the back rooms, like the pantry and the buttery (which is probably what you are thinking of when you say "butler's pantry") varied considerably over time and space. You don't say whether the house you are considering was built in the 18th century or earlier, whether it is a town-house or a country estate, whether it is in England or elsewhere, and which part of England, what architectural style was used, or even what size of establishment it is. All these things would affect the location of rooms like this.
In order to cover all these options I'd probably have to write a whole essay.......
