] ] ] What is the protocol for this? Is there any? Were there any rules saying when a gentleman could offer his arm to a woman? Were there rules as to when the arm could be accepted?
] One element of the protocol, when walking down a street, would be for the man to walk in the position nearest to the road. This way, if something splashes up, he gets hit and the lady is kept cleaner. In the days of horses littering the road, this was particularly important.
And when this was not essential the lady should be on his left arm. Leaving his right arm free to pull his sword and protect her if necessary! :)
