Yes, I suspect you are right. I finally made it to the library and found a book on men's fashions. (My library excursions can be rather interesting with a very active two-year-old!)

This book provides many pictures with dated descriptions as well as the country. What I noticed is that the relatively same style hat was referred to differently depending on the period, late 1700's refers to "cocked hat," early 1800's refers to "bicorn."
