I suspect the problem with this topic is that there were a whole bunch of names that all meant slightly different styles, but those nice distinctions are rather lost on us now. I get a catalog called Enhancements that sells a lot of reproduction hats (among other things), and they stock a very simple "bicorn." But, they say, "Other versions of bicorns are available: Navy, Napoleonic, Incroyable, Fore & Aft, Half Moon, etc. Send picture of desired style."
Compare this with all the different types of felt hat worn in the 1930s through '50s: fedora, trilby, homberg, porkpie, etc.
