Tatting vs. crocheting

] I'm a bit confused. My grandma does a lot of what we have always called crocheting (sp?), but I'm not sure if that's the right term. She makes lace-like doilies, placemats, snowflakes, angels etc. (She made a full set of placemats for my mom, my sister, and for me--that's a lot of work!) She uses a single small crochet hook to make her designs. Is that tatting or crocheting?



That's crocheting. Tatting is done with thread and a shuttle that looks like this:

It makes a very fine lace. My mother used to trim handkerchiefs with it.
