Her little shuttle was a precious looking silver thing that looked very old and seemed such an odd tool to me as a little girl. A memory that may not apply outside the Michigan farmlands: she never used any other form of the word, other than tatting; i.e., she didn't "tat" -- she did or worked "tatting."

Amy, my mother used to do tatting. The poor dear tried so hard to teach me, but my coordination is so poor that I couldn't do more than a few loops before the darned thing would knot up. Tilde's post also brought back memories to me.
