] What is the protocol for this? Is there any? Were there any rules saying when a gentleman could offer his arm to a woman? Were there rules as to when the arm could be accepted?

Rachel -- not entirely sure on this, except that walking arm in arm was seen as a relatively "innocent" or non-intimate gesture, and was much less protocol-bound than addressing each other withn first names, corresponding by letter, etc.

P.S. As a kid I had a book which purported to report that, after a wedding between two octupuses, the bride and groom walked down the aisle "arm in arm in arm in arm in arm in arm in arm in arm in arm in arm in arm in arm in arm in arm in arm in arm". ;-)
