Sue, in our Membership we have a couple of professional thatrical costume makers and several people who have made regency dresses for themselves. They all agree, that wearing a corset is essential to give the right "look" and movement.
Emma Thompson's Diaries of filming "Sense and Sensibility" apparently contain comments on how uncomfortable the corsets got. ( I have not read them)
Both Mark Strong and Benjamin Witrow have been quoted as saying that they found the clothes not only comfortable, but helped you to stand properly (They were not obliged to wear corsets, I hope)
