In response to those sheer, frilly lace things around their necks..., written by KellyB on October 20, 1997 at 14:32:59

] those sheer, frilly lace things around their necks... what are they called and were they only for decoration?

] They looked too flimsy to be of any real use - like warmth. But, with all the low-cut gowns, I'd think a little extra heat would be appreciated.

Kelly, you can look at http://www.pemberley.com/pemb/adaptations/pp2/messages/4769.html for an explanation...

Anyway, they didn't usually wear low-cut gowns without a shawl etc. except in ballrooms which would tend to be stuffy (with all the people, and probably a fire going).
