Trousers or breeches?

I just re-watched P&P this weekend (and determined I need to retape it tonight as my tape is worn) and noticed that the menfolk wear both trousers and breeches. There don't seem to be hard and fast trousers/day-breeches/evening rules -- Darcy in particular wears both. Any historical perspective out there? How long did it take men to transition from breeches to trousers?
