There was a great deal of controversy about the clergy simmering in the background of Georgian society.This isn't really the place to discuss it, but Jane Austen must have been aware of it, and that, plus the fact that she was the daughter of a parson, and knew many clergymen, makes it a strong presence in her novels.

Would you care to expand on this here? Also when did the church reforms come into place, and the practice of livings being the gifts of landowners come to an end?
