From various books I've been skimming, it seems it was common for people to want to tour a grand house or its gardens. I suppose it would have been a source of pride for someone to show their home. Afterall, these were estates of great architecture and wealth. What I can't imagine is having to give a tour of my house unannounced. My bulldozer doesn't work that fast! EL
