] Caroline, I have a book from my library , "The English: A Social History 1066-1945" by Christopher Hibbert. Part 1 covers the middle ages; Part 2, The ages of Shakespeare and Milton; Part 3, From Defoe to Cobbett (includes 18th century and Regency); Part 4, From the Victorians to Modern Times. I've been using it as a resource--it has chapters on Marriage and Divorce, Sex, Theatres and Shows, Quacks Diseases and Cures, Operations and Tooth-drawers, Below stairs, etc. Useful for general information although I won't vouch for its accuracy.

If it includes Cobbett, it must be good !;-)Thanks, Inko!
