Maybe I should have put this on the Emma board, but this board looked so folorn that I am putting it here.
Why was there not a concern with an entail on Highbury? While Mr. Woodhouse is not nearly as feeble as he lets on, I know that it was possible for anyone to suddenly become ill and die. In fact this was so common that the result was the constant inquiries into everyone's health. Why wasn't Emma concerned about being thrown out of her home by some unnamed distant male relative? Would this not have been an inducement to at least consider marriage? Instead, she states that she is resolved to never marry. Was this supposed to be an indication of her character? Did she expect that Mr. Knightley would take her in?
