Hair in JA films

I think Marianne in the S&S adaptation had the short curls, but I'm having trouble remembering how Elinor's was done.

Elinor had rather wispy curls in the front, but nothing like Marianne's. I recall her saying something about feeling like a horse with a permed fringe.

Maybe the smoother look was judged to be more attractive to modern audiences?

In P&P2, Charlotte is the only female character with no short hair in the front. Hers is completely pulled back. I've always wondered about that.
