I am 45 and a lefty and I still get odd stares once in awhile for the way I write (at least from those older than me). My left-handedness was barely tolerated in grade school, so I can imagine that no one but the child of a very indulgent parent would have been allowed to retain a tendency toward the left hand in Jane Austen's time.
