Stockings

Jane Austen's Town and Country Style, by Susan WAtkins reports the best stockings were made of silk and were generally white of flesh coloured and held in palce with garters. Worsted wool stockings were also worn, but apparently by the needy or those requiring more practical and warm coverings. It refers to Jane Fairfax in Emma knitting a pair for her grandmother. EL
