In the book Jane Austen's Town and Country Style it says toothaches were the most common medical complaints. Most common solution was extraction, but some were also hand drilled and filled with molten lead, tin or gold. In 1800, Wedgwood supplied paste for making china teeth. I would imagine there were many "gapped" grins, but maybe more so amongst those of poorer means? EL
