Yes, Ann, they do make the soles last longer! I have seen hobnails fairly recently- on Lancashire Clogs. These are heavy, wooden-soled shoes which are nowadays only used for traditional dancing, but were at one time the normal footgear of factory workers in Northern England.They are not quite like Dutch Clogs, but have a leather upper which laces up,nailed onto a wooden sole. Nails in the sole provide traction, noise, and durability.
