In the book Jane Austen In Style by Susan Watkins (ISBN 0-500-27900-4) she mentions that young ladies would be expected to stitch a sampler. In page 27 of the book there is a picture of a sampler reputed to be by Cassandra Austen. It has the alphabet and numbers stitched onto what looks like a piece of wool or linen. It looks a great deal like the top of a Whitman's Sampler chocolate box. There is also a stitch-work signature by "Cassandra Eliz Austen".
