The value of singeing v distressing ;-)

I always consider "distressing " to mean "allowing the kids to throw it round the room, and the gardener to put his hobnails on it" whilst "singeing" suggests "relict from a great historic event, the only survivor, a museum piece and therefore far too expensive for mere mortals..."
