Coming Out

I'm sure this has already been discussed (but I don't know how to find it) and is quite elementary to everyone, but I'm dense... okay? At any rate, what does this mean exactly? I'm guessing when it was near time for the girls to marry, but was there a certain age? Lady Catherine suggested a relationship between the older girls being married first. Also, did coming out mean going to balls and making those infamous visits? Or did it mean they were allowed to talk to gentlemen? Or did it mean what? Like dating? I'm looking for particulars.
